“I felt that this school had my best interests at heart,” said Demetria Jennings, a cosmetology student at Clary Sage College.

New to the city of Tulsa is cosmetology school, Clary Sage College, which is not only a place to learn massage therapy, hair cutting, and aesthetics, but also a salon to receive those relaxing services. Upon entering the college, a streaming waterfall is the backdrop of the reception desk. The salon, located on the first floor, is equipped with a hair salon, manicure and pedicure room, aesthetics wing, and ten massage therapy treatment rooms; all with students performing the actual services supervised by Master Instructors. Cosmetology students must perform 150 hours in the classroom prior to seeing clients. Once they are on the floor, their theory time decreases to one hour everyday with the remaining amount being spent working on clients. Students are often booked up to three weeks in advance. Clients can plan a whole spa treatment including a massage and manicure/pedicure, while relaxing in the serenity room, which is a dimly lit waiting room with soft serene music, in between services.

Clary Sage College is a sister college to Community Care College and both are owned by local business owner, Teresa Knox. Clary Sage was originally located at 81st & Lewis holding only 25 students. The school moved into its new facility and location last March. “We’re working towards a gradual increase so that we don’t overload the students,” said Blaze Bly, Assistant Director of Admissions.

Similar to any college, prospective students must fill out an application and be interviewed. “We want to make sure the student can dedicate the amount of time and commitment needed for the program,” said Bly. The classrooms, located on the second floor, include a mock hair salon where students practice on mannequin heads, a mock esthetics classroom and a massage room, used as a lab and classroom. Massage students go through sixteen courses and then they work on the public full time for an additional four to six weeks.

“Everyday I get to come to school and perform services as if I’m working in a salon,” said cosmetology student Elizabeth Redden. Faculty experience, a state-of-the-art campus and a progressive curriculum are reasons students choose Clary Sage College. “The atmosphere and the hands on training and experience is my favorite part of attending Clary Sage,” said cosmetology student Hayden Ganner.

The college also provides a career service center in which students are required to meet with a placement specialist prior to graduation. The department assists students with resume building, career development and interviewing skills and techniques. “Besides our extraordinary facility, we have a very developed a niche in the market that accommodates not only the public wanting to get spa-related services at a reduced rate, but graduating talented and creative salon professionals that are in high demand,” said Bly.
